ICSE Class 10 Answered
Why is chlorine discharged instead of hydroxyl ions(Hydroxyl ions can easily be discharged than Cl- ions according to series) ions during the elecrolysis of conc.NaCl?If you would say that its concentration is more than why hydrogen ion gets discharged of Na+ ions as they may also have a high concentration.

Expert Answer
In electrolysis of NaCl Chlorine discharged instead of hydroxyl ions because of high concentration.
But in case of hydrogen and Sodium ions, although Na ions are in higher concentration but hydroge ions discharged because of differennce in size, hydrogen ions shows more condutivity and will move faster as compared to Cl ions.
