Expert Answer
Africa was known as the “Dark Continent” because it remained unexplored for a fairly long period of time.
Factors that made is difficult for the explorer to venture in to the continent of africa were:
- The largest desert in the world, the Sahara Desert acted as a natural barrier for the European explorers.
- Africa had only few good natural harbours making it difficult for the Europeans to sail into the country.
- Most of Africa is made up of plateaus which rises steeply from the coasts making it difficult for the foreigners to reach the interior parts of the continent.
- Rivers of Africa as they approach the sea, forms high waterfalls. As a result, rivers could not be used or travelling into the continent.
- Further, the hot and humid climate and the dense forests made the climate of Africa inhospitable.
