CBSE Class 9 Answered
Why ions are more stable than atom?
Asked by | 28 Feb, 2013, 09:21: PM
Expert Answer
An ion is stable or partially stable correspondingly as it does not at all tend to gain or lose electrons or tends to gain or lose electrons at a later stage. Whereas, an atom, except that of an inert element, always tends either to gain or lose electrons as the valence shell of an atom does not have a complete octet, so to attain a stable configuration, it loses or gain electrons, it is in restless state and is thus unstable.
