why in water the molecules are not compactly packed

Dear Student,
The molecules of a liquid are packed relatively close together than gaseous phase and far apart than solids. Consequently, liquids are much denser than gases and lighter than solids. As the volume of ice becomes greater, it is less denser than water.
But, in case of water, ice is less denser than water because in ice, the molecules arrange themselves in a rigid tetrahedral structure due to which cage like empty spaces remain in their bonding.
But water molecules remain in linear bonding form. The particles in solids are very closely packed due to the very high intermolecular force of attraction.The intermolecular force of attraction is weaker in liquids than in solids, so the particles are less closely packed. Thus, in water, the molecules are not compactly packed.
