WHY GENDER MUST BE CONSIDERED FOR PLANNING A BALANCED DIET FOR A PERSON?

Men and women both require a nutritious balanced diet for long-term health, but gender plays a significant role in the amount of nutrients a person needs.
- Calorie requirement depend on age, height, gender, muscle mass and activity level. Muscle burns more calories than fat, so people with more muscle require more calories. Because women tend to be smaller and carry less muscle mass than men, their calorie needs are generally lower.
- Men and women have similar vitamin needs with slight differences due to body size. Pregnant women and women trying to become pregnant have higher folate needs than other adults.
- Mineral needs for both genders are also similar with a few exceptions. Due to blood loss from the monthly menstrual cycle, premenopausal women should consume more iron a day than men.
