why electric field lines donot form any closed loops and explain the physical significance of electric field

  • Electric field lines from a single polarity can never form a closed loop.
  • As the propagation of these field lines is guided by the inverse square law. i.e 1 over straight r squared
  • The propagation is inversely proportional to the square of the distance of the field lines.
  • Therefore, the electric field lines are propagated always radially inwards or radially outwards.
  • This is the reason why they don't form a closed loop.
  • However, it should be noted that the electric field lines of both the poles do form a closed loop.
