Why does carbon form covalent bonds?

Carbon is the sixth element in the periodic table hence its atomic number is six and electronic arrangement is (2, 4), which shows carbon atom has four valence electrons.
It could gain four electrons and form C4- anion or lose four electrons to form the C4+ cation. Both these conditions would take carbon far away from completing octet and stability. To overcome this problem carbon undergoes bonding by sharing its valence electrons.
As it needs four more electrons to complete its octet, it forms four covalent bonds by sharing its valence electrons with other atoms. This is known as tetravalency of carbon.
