ICSE Class 10 Answered

Why does a single movable pulley acts as a force multiplier
Asked by sarikaguleria14 | 14 May, 2019, 11:40: PM
answered-by-expert Expert Answer

The mechanical advantage of a single moveable pulley is 2.

This means that a moveable pulley will have half of the required force needed to move any object attached to it.

This occurs because in a moveable pulley one end of the rope is stationary, which means it absorbs some of the force

needed to move the object. So, if you attach a  50 kg load that gives weight of 500 newton to a moveable pulley,

you will only need to apply 250 newton of force to move the load as shown in figure because the moveable pulley

will multiply the applied force by 2.
