why does a cricket player moves his hand backwards which catching a fast cricket ball ?

When a player is catching the cricket ball, the ball comes with high speed hence the ball comes with huge momentum.
If the player stops the ball in very little time, momentum of the ball comes to zero in very little time that gives
huge impulsive force which will act on the players hand and he will get hurt.
 
If he moves his hand backward while catching the ball, momentum of the ball comes to zero in an appreciable time delay
so that impulsive force is reduced to the extent that the player can withstand that reduced force.
