Why do we form a negative opinion about certain people

We may form negative opinion about anyone because of certain stereotypes that exist in the society. When we believe that people belonging to particular groups based on religion, wealth, language etc. are bound to have certain fixed characteristics or can only do a certain type of work, we create a stereotype.
For example, the general stereotype about the adivasis are that they are uneducated and backward. And based on this stereotype we may create a negative image of tem in our mind. However, the adivasis are full of knowledge and wisdom which a general city dweller may lack.
