Why do the sun the moon and the earth not lie in the same line on every full moon and new moon day

Expert Answer
The orbit of the Moon around the Earth is at an angle with respect to the orbit of the Earth around the Sun.So, in order to get an eclipse, the Moon’s orbit has to intersect the Earth’s orbit along the line between the Sun and the Earth, which only happens a couple of times a year.
