ICSE Class 9 Answered
Why do joints become stiff with old age?

Expert Answer
Joints which allow considerable degree of movement have synovial fluid in between them. E.g. Shoulder joint and Hip joint. The synovial fluid lubricates the bones and thereby, removes friction. But with age, this synovial fluid starts decreasing and uric acid gets deposited in its place. Thus, friction increases and the joints become stiff.
