Why do beteel leaves stain our mouth with red colour?

Hi Shaswat,
The red colour is not due to the betel leaves but due to the combination of sreca nut (Areca catechu) and slaked lime (white colour) that is coated in the leaf. When wrapped and chewed, the areca nut and lime combine to give a red stain.
