Why did the Indian government adopted democracy

Answer:

The Indian government adopted democracy because of the following reasons:

  • India was under the colonial rule for about two centuries. The educated class and the Indian leaders were influenced by the British Parliamentary system and liberal democracy. Several Acts (like the Act of 1935) passed by the British government formed the basis of future Parliamentary system in India.
  • The Indian National Congress had several educated liberal minded leaders who believed and had trust in a democratic set up. They were of the opinion that democracy is the best form of government in India where people belonging to different religions, cultures, casts and sub-castes reside.
