Why did the condition of the peasants deteriorate under the British rule?

The conditions of peasants deteriorated under the British rule because the British were only concerned with the revenues of the state. They did nothing to improve the condition of agricultural land. The government levied high taxes on land. The revenues were generally not reduced even during droughts, floods etc. This made the condition of the Indian peasantry miserable.
