why cant alkanes with odd number of c-atoms be formed through kolbe's process?

Expert Answer
While preparing alkanes with odd number of carbon atoms by electrolysis of a mixture of two salts of different carboxylic acids (Kolbes process), a number of side products are also formed. Thats why this method is not preferred for the preparation of alkanes containing odd number of carbon atoms.
