Transition elements (d-block elements) and their compounds act as a good catalyst, i.e., they show catalytic activities. This is because they have free valency which works as a platform for the other reactant molecule to interact quickly. For example, nickel is used as a catalyst in the hydrogenation reaction. Iron acts as a catalyst in Haber's process during the synthesis of ammonia.
