Why are flexor and extensor muscles of our hand known as antagonistic muscles?

The flexor (biceps) muscle of the upper arm bends the lower arm over the upper arm. Straightening (extension) of the lower arm is brought about by extensor (triceps) muscle. As these muscles cause opposing movements, they are known as antagonistic muscles.
