Latitudes and longitudes are drawn as circles on the globe. While longitudes are great circles, latitudes are small circles which become smaller as they go towards the Poles. Since the latitudes and the longitudes are actually points of intersection with the Earth’s surface from the center of the Earth, the distances from reference lines are measured in angles. They are angular measurements expressed as degrees of a circle measured from the center of the Earth. This gives us more accuracy in measuring the distance.
