CBSE Class 12-science Answered

why are crstalline solids,i.e those with regular arrangement more stable than solids having random arrangement(amorphous)?

answered-by-expert Expert Answer
  • The crystalline solid is in its most thermodynamically stable form due to its long range regular molecular arrangements .
  • By introducing thermal and mechanical energy can lead to full or partial loss of crystallinity and the formation of amorphous or disordered crystalline material.
  • Molecules in the amorphous state have no long-range regular order but retain the short-range irregular molecular order typical of liquids.
  • Hence, crytalline solids are more stable due to greater thermodynamic stabliy owing to its regular molecular arrangement than amorphous solids.
