Why are antiviral medicines like antibiotics difficult to produce?

Viruses are acellular organisms. They have very little genetic material of their own and they take over the host cell nucleus to reproduce. Also, they mutate frequently and therefore, it is difficult to produce antiviral medicines like antibiotics to kill or inhibit them.
