Expert Answer
There are two types of forces acts within the nucleus. Nuclear force, directly proportional to number of nucleon, is a short range force and helps in holding the nucleus together whereas electrostatic force which is directly proportional to the square of atomic number and try to break the nucleus. As the atomic number increases the electrostatic force will also increase and makes the nucleus unstable. To stablize the nucleus, alpha decay takes place and reduces the size of the nucleus.
