A heterocyclic compound or ring structure is a cyclic compound that has atoms of at least two different elements as members of its ring. So, both ribose and adenine are heterocyclic compounds.
Ribose is a 5 membered cyclic structure having two or more heteroatoms that resemble a furanose structure.
Adenine (naturally occurring purine) is a heterocyclic 6 membered cyclic structure.
Phosphate is not a heterocyclic compound.
