ICSE Class 10 Answered

When we talk about factors affecting the discharge of ions we consider the concentration of the electrolyte as one of the factors.during electrolysis of Concentrated NaCl, the concentration of Na ions is more than the concentration of Hydrogen ions. But hydrogen ions are discharged at the cathode. why not Na ions?

In the electrolysis of concentrated NaCl solution, the products are hydrogen gas at cathode and chlorine gas at the anode.
Even if there are more number of sodium ions in the solution than hydrogen ions, still hydrogen gas is produced at the cathode due to the high negative reduction potential of sodium ions.
