When I have to write the chemical formula for an element with more than 1 valency say copper nitrate ,what is the valency that i have to use for copper,1or2?

Copper nitrate with varialble valency is mentioned as:
Copper(I) nitrate = with valency 1 = CuNO3
Copper(II) nitrate = with valency 2 = Cu(NO3)2
