Anaerobic respiration occurs when there is not enough oxygen getting to the cells for respiration, in every living cell.

For example, during exercise our body needs more oxygen for more energy as we use up more energy when we exercise. In order to respire our body needs oxygen and so our breathing rate increases. Although, if even with we breath more, our body cannot respire enough, so our cells will respire anaerobically. This means that the body performs respiration without oxygen and just glucose.

Lactic acid is rapidly broken down into a compound called lactate. So, when lactate production exceeds, it accumulates in muscles and bloodstream giving a sensation of fatigue.

Even when we exercise very hard we can sometimes feel that our muscles begin to hurt and cramp. This is because, part of anaerobic respiration produces lactic acid as a by-product to energy. This acid, being acidic, wears away our muscles, and so it hurts.
