When did the Bhakti movement begin in India? Discuss its main features.

The Bhakti movement began in India in 7th century CE. Its main features were

  1. It stressed on the idea of personal devotion to God.
  2. It challenged the domination of priests over religion and society.
  3. The Bhakti movement rejected rituals, dogmas and superstitions which were existing in the Indian society.
  4. The movement stressed on the principles of equality and universal brotherhood.
  5. During this time, many ancient texts written in Sanskrit were translated into the local languages.
  6. It was believed that through knowledge under the guidance of a guru or a teacher, one can experience the presence of God.
