After being defeated by Sher Khan in the Battle of Kannauj in 1540, Humayun wandered from place to place and sought refuge from many kings. He was finally given shelter by the Shah of Persia. He spent the next fifteen years in the court of the Shah. Meanwhile, he defeated his brother Kamran and became the ruler of Kabul and Kandahar.

Sher Shah Suri died due to an accident in 1545 CE. His successors were weak and incompetent. Taking advantage of the situation, Humayun captured Delhi and Agra in 155 CE and became the emperor of India.
