CBSE Class 12-science Answered
When atoms start coming nearer to form a solid, there are different energy states(6N and 2N as per NCERT Physics pg 470). These different states which originally had the same energy spread out to form an energy band. Please explain why this happens. why does it spread out.

1) First, let us understand what same energy means for the states. All the 6N states are having the same energy and all the 2N states are having the same energy. 6N and 2N states do not have same energies. This is shown in region A. 6N state is a straight line and 2N state is a straight line but these lines are at different levels.
2) Now, when we say that atoms are coming near, then the electrons in the outer orbit start interacting with other electrons. This interaction is what causes the energy change. Now, all the electrons do not have the same energy and the 6N and 2N states spread out with non-uniform energies. So, here you have it the reason for spread is the interaction of electrons when atoms come near to each other.
