What will be the magnification (positive/negative) in the following cases? when the image is real and inverted, and when the image is virtual and erect. Also give reason.

(a) When the image is real, it lies below the principal axis; hence height of image is negative as per New Cartesian sign convention. As height of object is always positive, therefore,
