The Marathas, though brave, suffered from many weaknesses. The following causes can be attributed to their downfall:

1. They lacked unity and could not consolidate themselves under one strong central authority.

2. The Marathas were not concerned about the administration of their regions, but were only interested in the collection of taxes. They did nothing to improve agriculture, trade and commerce.

3. They conquered the northern states and looted them; hence they failed to win the support of the Rajputs, Jats and the Sikhs.

4. The Third battle of Panipat gave a severe blow to their power and they could no longer obstruct the expansion of the Europeans.

5. They completely neglected their navy, while the English maintained a powerful naval force.
