From about 1294 to the year 1789, i.e., the French Revolution, French people were required to observe what were known as the sumptuary laws. The sumptuary laws sought to control the so called socially inferior classes, prohibited the use of certain clothes by them or consumption of certain types of food or beverages and hunting of game in certain areas of territory controlled by the state.
