An indulgence was a payment to the Catholic Church made by a person from getting an exemption from punishment for some types of sins.
It means that people who committed a sin, could be freed of their sins by buying an indulgence from the Roman Catholic Church. Many people including Martin Luther King opposed the sale of indulgences.
