Following were the array of reactions to the August Declaration in India:

  1. The Early Nationalists welcomed the August Declaration and called it the ‘Magna Carta of India’. This was so because the Magna Carta of 1215 was seen as the first step towards democratic rule in England.
  2. The Assertive Nationalists criticised the Declaration as being inadequate. Tilak called it “unworthy and disappointing - a sunless dawn”. Annie Besant also criticised the declaration as “unworthy of England to offer and India to accept” and demanded that India be accorded self-government no later than 1928.
