what was the main cause of revolt of 1857
The apparent main and immediate cause of 1857 was the introduction of the new Enfield rifle in the English East India Company army. It was rumoured that the cartridge of this new rifle was covered with the fat of cows and pigs. This infuriated Hindu and Muslim soldiers alike and proved to be the spark for the eventual rebellion.
