After the passing of the Government of India Act of 1935, political activity in the country went into high gear. On the basis of the Act, elections were held in 1937. Both the then major parties in India - the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League - contested the elections. However, it turned out to be a sweeping victory for the Indian National Congress.
