What was the british policy towards indian states after the revolt of 1857?

After the Revolt of 1857, the administration of the colony of India was transferred from the English East India Company to the British crown and the queen of England officially became the sovereign of the Indian populace. The queen of England issued an official proclamation from the crown that the colonial state will not interfere in the religious matters of the native population. The Muslims were seen by the colonial government as the real perpetrators of the Revolt of 1857 and were persecuted in systematic and ruthless manner. The Indian society was divided by the British on the basis of caste, the categories being ‘Martial Castes’ and the other castes. Furthermore, seeds for communal discord were deliberately sown in order to negate the possibility of any such similar future endeavours by the native population.
