answered-by-expert Expert Answer
A wave is a repeating and periodic disturbance transmitted from one place to another in a medium.
Here medium refers to intervening substance through which a disturbance is transmitted.
Waves transfer energy, momentum and information, but mass is not transferred.

Waves are classified as Mechanical waves and electromagnetic waves according to the medium.

Mechanical waves :- Sound waves, Sea waves are examples of mechanical waves.
For sound waves air is the medium.Sound waves also propagates in liquids and solids.
For sea waves waater is the medium.

Electormagnetic waves : Visible light, infrared radiation from hot objects, radio waves are some examples of
electromagnetic waves. For electromagnetic wave electric and magnetic fields are acting as medium.

Waves are classified as Transverse and longitudinal wave according to the direction of moving object
that produces wave and the direction of propagation of wave.
In transverse wave disturbed object moves perpendicular to the direction of propagation.
Electromagnetic waves are transverse waves.
In Longitudinal wave, disturbed object moves parallel to direction of propagation.Sound is longitudinal wave.

Characterstic of waves:-
Amplitude :- Maximum absolute value of periodically varying quantity such as displacement, pressure etc.
In sound waves loudness of sound depends of amplitude.

Frequency :- Number of cycles of repeating sequence of events in a unit interval of time.
If String instruments vibrates in certain frequency, they produce sound waves of same frequency.

Period (T) :- It is reciprocalof period. The time between successive cycles of repeating sequence of events.

Wavelength :- The nearest distance between the similar displacement points in a wave

Speed :- wave propagates with finite speed in a given medium which is called as wave speed.
Example :- speed of sound, speed of light etc.  Speed depends upon the nature and state of medium
