Water of Crystallisation

  • Some salts, while crystallising out from their aqueous solutions, unite with a definite quantity of water which is known as water of crystallisation.
  • The water of crystallisation is in loose chemical combination with salt.
  • It can be driven out by heating the powdered crystals of these salts above 100°C.

Example:

When blue crystals of copper sulphate are heated in a test tube, they lose their water of crystallisation to form white-coloured powder of anhydrous copper sulphate.

Plaster of paris ( CaSO4.1/2 H2O)

Epsom salt (MgSO4.7 H2O)
