Expert Answer
The increase in the dimension of a body due to increase in its temperature is called thermal expansion.
Thermal expansion of gases can be explained using Kinetic theory. For an ideal gas, the coefficient of volume expansion at constant pressure can be found from the ideal gas equation.
pV = μRT .............(1)
at constant pressure, we can write the above equation in terms of small changes in volume and temperature as
p ( ΔV )= μR( ΔT )...............(2)
dividing (2) by (1), ΔV/V = ΔT/T
Hence volume expansion coefficient αv = (1/ΔT) (ΔV/V) = 1/T
