Let particle A be at initial position (2,3) and particle B be at initial position (6,7) in the cartesian coordinate system.
Let both the particle collide at C (p,q) as shown in figure
x-component velocity of A = 3 units ; x-displacement of A = (p-2) units ; time = (p-2)/3 .............(1)
x-component velocity of B = x units ; x-displacement of B = (p-6) units ; time = (p-6)/x .............(2)
hence we have, (p-2)/3 = (p-6)/x .................(3)
y-component velocity of A = 1 units ; y-displacement of A = (q-3) units ; time = (3-q)/1 .............(4)
y-component velocity of B = 5 units ; y-displacement of B = (q-7) units ; time = (7-q)/5 .............(5)
hence we have, (3-q)/1 = (7-q)/5 .................(6)
By solving eqn.(6) fo q, we get q = 2 and time to collide is 1 s;
In eqn.(3), (p-2)/3 = (p-6)/x = 1 .........................(7)
FRom eqn.(7), we get p = 5 and x = -1
