Significance of valence electrons:

  1. The valence electrons of an atom are responsible for and take part in chemical change.
  2. The valance electrons determine the combining capacity or the valency of the atom. The number of electrons in atom that actually take part in a chemical reaction is known as the valency of the element.
  3. If the outermost shell of an atom is completely filed, its valency = 0
  4. Elements having the same number of valence electrons in their atoms possess similar chemical properties.
  5. Element having different number of valence electrons in their atom show different chemical properties.
