Expert Answer
Significance of valence electrons:
- The valence electrons of an atom are responsible for and take part in chemical change.
- The valance electrons determine the combining capacity or the valency of the atom. The number of electrons in atom that actually take part in a chemical reaction is known as the valency of the element.
- If the outermost shell of an atom is completely filed, its valency = 0
- Elements having the same number of valence electrons in their atoms possess similar chemical properties.
- Element having different number of valence electrons in their atom show different chemical properties.
