What is the role of acids and bases in our digestive system?

Hydrochloric acid produced in our stomach helps in digestion of food without harming the stomach. Excess of acid is produced during indigestion which increases pH level of stomach resulting in pain and irritation. To get rid of it bases called antacids are used, which neutralize the excess acid.
