A light year is the distance covered by light in one year at the speed of 300,000 kilometres per second.
Speed of light = 300000 km/s and 1 year = 365 × 24×60×60 sec
I light year = 300000 × 365×24×60×60 km
= 9460800000000 km
Light-year is most often used when expressing distances to stars and other distances on galactic scale.i.e to express large distances we use the unit known as light year.
