Expert Answer
Valency of an atom is equal to the number of electrons in the outer shell.
If the number of electrons in the outermost shell is four or less than four then it is the valency of that atom. Otherwise the valency is eight minus the number of electrons in the outermost shell.
If you know the number of electrons in the outer shell then you can calculate the valency.
With the help of periodic table:
There is no need to byheart the valency
1) Find out the atomic number.
2) Find out the position of that element in the periodic table, that means group and period.
3) Knowing the group number is more important as it directly give you valency.
4) Understand the trend of valency in the periodic table.
For example, in period 2, it goes on increasing from lithium to carbon as 1 to 4 and then decreases from nitrogen to neon as 3 to 0.
Remember that valency does not have positive or negative sign. Oxidation states are positive or negative.
