Expert Answer
In a p-n junction, due to the concentration difference, holes try to diffuse from the p-side to n-side. This diffusion results in an electric current from the p-side to the n-side. This current is known as diffusion current. Now since the electron-hole pairs are continuously created in the depletion region, there is a regular flow of electrons from towards the n-side and of holes towards the p-side. This current is known as the drift current. Hence, diffusion current and drift current are in opposite directions.
