Smooth endoplasmic reticulum

(i) Ribosomes are absent

(ii) Present near cell membrane

(iii) Main function is lipid synthesis

Rough endoplasmic reticulum

(i) Ribosomes are present

(ii) Present near nucleus

(iii) Main function is protein synthesis
