What is the difference between electric current and conventional current?

Answer:
Current is the flow of charges. Now, when electric current was discovered, electrons werewas thought to be the flow of positive charges. However, after the discovery of electrons it was known that current is the flow of electrons. But, convention was not discarded and both the currents were defined. Hence, electric current is the flow of electrons in a circuit. It is directed from the negative terminal to the positive terminal. Conventional current on the other hand is the flow of positive charges and is directed from positive terminal of the battery to the negative terminal. The arrow in a circuit diagram always shows the conventional current.

Electric current is the flow of electrons. So, it should flow from the negative to the positive terminal. But my teachers say that the conventional direction of the current flow is high (positive terminal) to low (negative terminal) potential. Which statement is true? If both are true, then why? And please explain to me the difference between Direct and Alternating current. Please help, my exams are coming.
