Mechanical waves require a material medium to travel. These waves are divided into two different types.
1. Transverse waves cause the medium to move perpendicular to the direction of the wave.
2. Longitudinal waves cause the medium to move parallel to the direction of the wave.

Since sound needs a material medium for its propagation, it is a mechanical wave. Also, the sound wave which propagates as a series of compressions and rarefactions is a longitudinal wave.
