Expert Answer
Sound waves are longitudinal waves which consists of compressions and rarefactions travelling through a medium.
Amplitude: When a wave passes through a medium, the particles of the medium get displaced temporarily from their roiginal undisturbed positions. The maximum displacement of the particles of the medium from their original undisturbed positions, when a wave passes through the medium is called amplitude of the wave.
The amplitude describes the size of the wave. The loudness or softness of a sound is determined by its amplitude.
Graphical representation of longitudinal waves:
When a longitudinal waves passes through a medium, say air, then some of the particles of air get crowded together and form compression, whereas other particles go farther apart and form a rarefaction.
A longitudinal wave is represented pictorially by showing compressions and rarefactions as below:
In compression, the density of air is high whereas in rarefaction the density of air is low. Thus, when a longitudinal wave passes through air, then the density of air continuously changes. S, a longitudinal wave in air is represented graphically by a density-distance graph.
